Economic Development: Real Progress for Urbana
Over the past four years, 96 new and expanded businesses have been added to Urbana's tax base. Four years ago people asked for more retail because they wanted to be able to shop in Urbana. We now have dozens more new retail stores and restaurants to choose from. The increased revenue from the sales tax has allowed the city to lower the city property tax rate and keep an excellent level of public services. The new revenue has also provided a cushion for us to withstand the recession without cutting services or raising taxes.
Philo Road is undergoing a dramatic revitalization. Redevelopment of Lincoln Square and downtown continues. New residential and commercial development sprouts throughout the city. Our Boneyard Creek beautification plan will enhance the downtown. Our Public Arts Commission will add to the vibrancy of Urbana. The Urbana Farmers Market is one of the best in the nation.
